German police officers patrol as people commemorate VE-Day at the Soviet Memorial in Treptower park, Berlin, Germany, May 09, 2022. Berlin's' State senate banned any public display of war medals, military uniforms or national flags of Russia and Ukraine near monuments and commemoration sites. Thus to prevent instrumentalization of the day, especially by Russia or Ukraine for political gain. Victory in Europe day, marks the day of the official surrender of Nazi Germany to the allies. It is celebrated by western allied countries on the 8th of May, and by countries in the former Soviet Union on the 9th of May, the past-midnight date in these regions at the time.
