The order for the start of the construction of the Berlin wall was issued on 13 August, 1961. The barrier which consists of roughly 43 kilometer of concrete wall, watch towers, check-points, barbed wire and mines, creating a border strip separating the former Western Allies' enclave of West Berlin, from the rest of the city under DDR control. The wall stood until the 9th of November, 1989.
