The Island was effected by massive waves of refugees in the past as well. The statue of the "Asia Minor Mother" is found on
the waterfront of Epano Skala, in the Islands capital, Mytilene. It commemorates the arrival of christian refugees that
were banished from Asia Minor (Modern Turkey) by force in 1922, and were forced to seek shelter on the Greek island of Lesvos.
